1000 Books Before Kindergarten
Reading with infants, toddlers, and preschoolers is the first step toward future school success! Why not start now? Join the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program! Sign up at Youth Services for your official 1000 Books Before Kindergarten reading log to record books anyone reads to your child (including grandparents, babysitters, teachers, and more!), then we’ll help you track your way to school readiness! Check in after every 100 books read for a sticker incentive, and a free book for your child at certain milestones.
Unfortunately we no longer have coaching for our chess program, but Drop-in Chess is still going on! This is an informal program for children and families. There is no instruction but you can stop in on Tuesday evenings between 5-7 PM to play just for fun. Other board games may also be available.
Early Chapter Books
Have you been looking for just the right book for your beginning reader? There’s a new way to find them on the shelf! Look for books with orange tinted spine labels in the j Fiction section. Series that have been identified include the Owl Diaries, the Dragon Masters, the Princess in Black, the A to Z Mysteries, and Cam Jansen, plus many more! There’s something for everyone to enjoy this summer.
Mass Children’s Book Award
The 2018 nominees for the Massachusetts Children’s Book Award have been announced, and we have them all at the TPL! Check the MCBA award shelf (behind the new books) in Youth Services for books on the current list. Students in grades 4 through 6 need to read at least 5 of the books to vote for their favorite in early 2018.
